Blending Grit and Grace into Powerful, Heart-Centered Songwriting
Yema Electa is a Washington, DC–born songwriter whose work blends emotional honesty with a fearless approach to genre. Rising from challenging beginnings to earn a Master’s degree from Howard University, she developed a creative voice shaped by resilience, curiosity, and a deep love for storytelling. Her music stands out for its ability to move fluidly between R&B, pop, and electronic soundscapes while maintaining a lyrical core that is vivid, spiritual, and sincere.
Writing and music have been the two constants in Yema Electa’s life. She wrote her first book at nine years old—an earnest, misspelled ode to whales that still sits on her shelf as a reminder of where her journey began. Singing became her second language; she joined her school’s choral group in the second grade and continued vocal training through college. These early experiences built the foundation for her artistic identity, one rooted in expression, discipline, and an abiding respect for craft.
Her musical inspirations span genres and generations, including Minnie Riperton, Queen, Teena Marie, Fred Hammond, Alanis Morissette, and Mariah Carey. Their influence can be felt not in imitation, but in the versatility of her catalog—songs that can sit comfortably as intimate R&B ballads or rise into soaring, high-energy anthems. Before turning fully to songwriting, Yema Electa published poetry, including her 2023 collection Souvenirs from the Storm: Poetic Reflections of Love, Loneliness, and Self-Discovery, now available on Amazon.
Today, Yema Electa licenses her work for artist recordings, commercials, film, and television. Storytelling remains the foundation of everything she creates—whether in a song, a poem, or a narrative project. Her debut songwriting collection, From Me to You, is available now, showcasing the emotional clarity and melodic range that define her style. Her second project, When I Was Her, is slated for early 2026 and reflects a more introspective chapter in her writing. She is also expanding into children’s music with Welcome to the Joy Garden, arriving in Spring 2026.
